Tour Details

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most popular hikes in South America. It is a four-day trek that takes you through some of Peru’s most breathtaking landscapes, culminating in the ancient city of Machu Picchu.

The trail starts at Km 82 on the Sacred Valley and winds its way up into the Andes Mountains, where you will be treated to views of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys and cloud forests. Along the way you will pass by several impressive Inca sites like Wiñay Wayna and Intipunku (the Sun Gate).

Hiking along this trail is not for everyone though. It can be quite challenging due to its altitude and length. Make sure to train before attempting this hike! You should also book your tour early, since permits are limited and sell out quickly during peak season.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Piscacucho (Km 82) - Wayllabamba

We will arrive at your accommodation in Cusco at 6:00 am. Then, we will drive to Ollantaytambo. From there, we will board a train that takes us to Km 82, which is where you begin hiking the Inca Trail.

Once we reach Km 82, there will be a few security checkpoints that must be cleared before starting the Inca Trail. Afterwards, our initial hike will bring us to Miskay campsite where we will take a break for lunch. After that, we will proceed to the Patallaqta Inca ruins.

After our trip to Patallaqta, we will make our way through Kusicacha valley and arrive at Wayllabamba village. We will then take a look around the nearby Patawasi Inca ruins. Afterwards, we will set up our campsite nearby, have dinner, and spend the rest of the night there.

Day 2Wayllabamba - Warmi Wañusqa - Pacaymayo

We will get up early in the morning for our first meal of the day. After that, we will hike to Warmiwañusca, or “Dead Woman’s Pass”, which is the highest point on the Inca Trail. This point stands at an amazing elevation of 4,200 meters (13,779 feet).

After passing Warmiwañusca, we will proceed to Pacaymayo for lunch. After traversing this point, we will set up our camp and spend the afternoon taking a rest. Subsequently, we will have dinner before bedding down for the night.

Day 3Pacaymayo - Phuyupatamarka - Wiñay Wayna

After breakfast, we will ascend to the Runcuracay Pass which stands at an altitude of 3,950 meters (12,959 feet). After that, we will explore the Sayacmarca Inca ruins which were used by the Incas as a defense for Machu Picchu. We then continue our journey to Phuyupatamarka, where we will take a break and have lunch.

After lunch, we will journey to the Intipata Inca terraces and eventually get to the Wiñay Wayna ruins. This site served as a stop for the Inca rulers while they were heading towards Machu Picchu. We will set up our tents close by Wiñay Wayna and have dinner. We will stay there overnight.

Day 4Wiñay Wayna - Machu Picchu - Cusco

We will have breakfast at our campsite around 5:30 am. Afterwards, we will journey to Inti Punku, which is the entrance to the Machu Picchu citadel. Once passing this landmark, we will gain access to the mysterious lost city of Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca city located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Built around 1450, it was abandoned shortly after the Spanish conquest of South America and lay undiscovered until 1911. Since then, Machu Picchu has become one of the most important archaeological sites in South America and a major tourist destination for travelers from all over the world. It is believed that Machu Picchu served as a retreat for Inca leaders or possibly even as a religious site. However, its precise purpose remains unknown to this day.

If you have purchased an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu Mountain, or Huayna Picchu Mountain, our staff will guide you to the respective entrance.

After the tour, we will return to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to have lunch. The cost of the lunch is not included in the tour price. Then, we will board a train to Ollantaytambo. Once we get there, our team will take you back to Cusco city, where you will be arriving around 9:00 pm.
